Wide Array of Use of Ruby Orifice and Sapphire Ball in Jewel Bearing Provides Long Life by Shelly Srikrishnan
In fine instrument industries, small bearing have a big role to play. Bearings are spherical or half spheres which help in smooth one way passage of materials across a particular path. In such applications and instrumentation, it is required that the amount of substances passing through the ball bearing joint is strong and sturdy. The balls can be present on an orifice through which fluids in high speed are passed, or these balls can be circumvented as a head for the rotation of axles.
For a large number of industries such as valve making, electric meter, watch industry, and optical industry, a very fine balance is required. In high speed ejection system, where the liquid is to be passed through a thin orifice, the use of plastic, steel or other such materials, would wear out quickly, causing damage. If such damages occur in medical equipments, then the whole reading that is being taken with it gets distorted.
Replacing these items will be costly, and the equipments would lie defunct, for as long as the repair work is not over. Ruby orifice on the other hand is a small nozzle like structure which is made of ruby, and provides the hardness and prevention from wear and tear. Speed jet fluids have a very strong force which is not imaginable by common man. But for the scientists, making these orifices or ball bearing from sapphire or ruby, gives a new dimension in making precision instruments.
Jewel bearings are normally used in applications where long life and wear resistance are required along with consistency. These jewel bearings or ball ruby are processed through hot polishing which helps in giving the sharp and smooth finish. When the ball ruby or sapphire ball is polished in such a manner, it can reduce the friction to the minimal level and therefore, they can be used in instruments or gadgets where high degree of precision is required.
Jewel bearings are made up of such materials instead of stainless steel. Although glass is sometimes used in the manufacture of such instruments, yet, the use of sapphire ball or ruby orifice can lend a good conductivity. Sapphire, due to its high thermal tolerance and scratch proof nature, can be used in various hand held devices, such as barcode scanners, so that they are durable, allow refractive light to pass and also make their use quick.
In most cases of minute and precision instruments like watt hour meters, KWH meters, marine compasses, etc, the use of sapphire window is being rampantly done. It is because of the heat tolerance, that the feed through insulator is made of sapphire or ruby. Feed thru insulator is an important ingredient of electrical connections which have the danger of getting extremely heated up.
When sapphire is used for such insulator, windows and jewel bearings, not only the customers are benefited, but the cost to the company for making these products is also less. Steel availability might not be high for coming days, but, with these metals, the usage in precision equipments would be more, especially when thermal tolerance, wear and friction is to be minimized.
